Kia ora Awhi community,
It’s been a busy few weeks. How are you all doing? There are two big events coming up - this weekend and next.
First up: Living in the Gaps: survival, advocacy, and change, in Aotearoa’s healthcare system. This free, online symposium is for people with lived experience of health conditions, illnesses, or disabilities (or who do advocacy, work, or research in these areas).
The event is on 9:30am to 5pm, SATURDAY 25th MARCH 2023, via Zoom (you can check out the draft programme here).
The event is being run by a team based at Otago University, and funded by a Fast Start Marsden Grant (more info here). The goal is to facilitate shared conversations about health & disability funding issues that affect a variety of different communities, in different ways, in contemporary Aotearoa; to document experiences, share knowledge, and to think about directions forward, together.
The symposium is open to anyone, of any age, from Aotearoa New Zealand, who feels their life or work experience relates to this topic. Register here.
Have you observed or been affected by healthcare harm? Consider attending this interactive hui to learn more about restorative responses to health care harm on 28 March 2023 in Wellington.
Hui participants will learn how restorative practice and hohou te rongo (peace-making from a te ao Māori world view) are emerging in Aotearoa New Zealand. Mātauranga Māori is an important root of restorative philosophy here, and te ao Māori experts will facilitate a kōrero about how hohou te rongo might be provided alongside culturally safe restorative practice.
Health professionals who have completed Te Ngāpara Centre for Restorative Practice Victoria University of Wellington micro credential course will share their experiences of:
successes and challenges of developing restorative initiatives across various settings, such as mental health and addiction and maternity
the national restorative response into harm from surgical mesh
embedding healing and learning within the health and disability systems.
Who should attend?
Anyone involved in health care and interested in a restorative response to healing, learning and improving from harm. $55 per person plus GST. [If you can’t afford this - let Awhi Ngā Mātua know by emailing hello@awhingamatua.org.nz - and we’ll see if we can fund your attendance. - Emily].
At the end of the hui you will be able to:
describe the restorative system principles and why they are important within the unique context of Aotearoa New Zealand
appreciate how restorative responses might be used to heal, learn and improve after harm
identify enablers and barriers in your own context.
You can register for this event here.
