Kia ora Awhi community,
Today, Whaikaha announced sweeping changes to its purchasing rules and Equipment and Modification Services (EMS). This means what can be claimed with Carer Support funding and Individualised Funding has changed.
You can read more about the changes here.
Like many advocacy and support groups for disabled people and their whānau, Awhi was caught off guard with this announcement.
We are trying to get answers for you and the community from Whaikaha. We will do our best to share updates if, and when, we have them.
We are asking the community for feedback to provide to Whaikaha and to inform our next steps as a community. We want to act on your behalf, so we need to know how you’re feeling.
Please fill out this form and let us know how the changes will impact your family.
Please share this form with your friends and family. We want to hear from you.
We know this is an uncertain and distressing time for parents and caregivers.
Self care is really important right now. Please take time to switch off from this news. Speak to family and friends about your concerns.
If you are particularly distressed right now, please contact your GP for an urgent appointment.

You may be experiencing carer burnout and depression if you have:
Feelings of hopelessness
Inability to sleep or sleeping too much
Withdrawal from friends and family
Anxiety and agitation
Dramatic mood changes
Waves of rage and anger
Feelings that reflect not having a reason to live or a sense of purpose
These cues should be taken seriously. If you are concerned that someone you know is considering suicide, it is vital to ask them directly if they are thinking about suicide and help them access resources to prevent suicide.
We know there is a lot of alarm in our community about sudden changes to carer support. Please contact your GP and say “I urgently need help as I am feeling suicidal” if you are struggling with suicidal ideation right now.
Please know our community is strong. You are strong. We see you and want you to know we are holding space for you and as a community will do all that we can to provide answers and support in the coming weeks.
Ngā mihi and arohanui,
Emily & Elizabeth & the Awhi team
